Durante el juicio trascendió que retenía la pistola del militar argentino como "un trofeo de guerra" en recuerdo de 22 colegas de la SAS muertos en el conflicto de 1982 entre el entonces Gobierno de Margaret Thatcher y la Junta militar de Buenos Aires.
La Policía inglesa descubrió otras armas de fuego y correspondiente munición en el sótano de la vivienda del ahora ex soldado de 65 años de edad.
El juez reconoció la distinguida carrera del veterano combatiente, pero advirtió que "en las manos equivocadas, estas armas podrían llevar a la muerte de agentes de policía o causar todo tipo de desordenes".
El diario sensacionalista The Sun lanzó una campaña a favor de la excarcelación de Patterson, que ha saltado a las redes sociales.
Este lunes cerca de 42.000 personas habían firmado la petición por la liberación de "una leyenda de las SAS, cuya sentencia es injusta", según afirma The Sun.
El excomandante de las Fuerzas británicas en Afganistán, el coronel Richard Kemp, protestó por la cultura dominante "políticamente correcta" que permite "tratar como a un traficante de drogas a un héroe militar que arriesgó su vida para defender a su país".
